Southern Africa

Namibia is a landscape trip with wildlife in it

Red dunes at Sossusvlei, the salt pan and floodlit waterholes of Etosha, desert adapted elephant in Damaraland, and the fog belt of the Skeleton Coast.

We hold no photography of our own for this destination yet, so this page is set in type rather than dressed in pictures that are not ours. We also publish no fixed rate card here: it is quoted to order.

In short

Distances are long and the roads are gravel. Namibia rewards two weeks far more than one.

Sossusvlei and Deadvlei are the photographic centrepiece: the highest dunes in the world at sunrise, and dead camelthorn trees on a white clay pan.

Etosha does the wildlife differently. You sit at a waterhole and the animals come to you, floodlit at night at the main camps, which is a very easy kind of game viewing.

Damaraland holds desert adapted elephant and rhino, tracked with local guides. And Namibia has some of the darkest skies on earth, which several lodges are built around.

Why go

Four reasons travellers choose Namibia

01

Sossusvlei at sunrise

The single most photographed landscape in southern Africa, and it deserves the reputation.

02

Etosha waterholes

Wildlife comes to you, floodlit after dark at the main camps.

03

Desert adapted wildlife

Elephant and rhino living in Damaraland, tracked on foot and by vehicle with local guides.

04

Space and dark skies

One of the least densely populated countries on earth. You will drive for hours without seeing another car.

Getting there, and how we quote it

Travel and access

Trips start and end in Windhoek, usually via Johannesburg from Nairobi.

Expect long gravel road drives. Fly-in itineraries between lodges are possible and cost considerably more.

Two weeks is the comfortable length for the classic circuit.

How we handle this destination

We quote Namibia to order rather than from a fixed rate card.

Self drive and guided versions of the same route price very differently, and we will show both.

The Skeleton Coast and Kaokoland can be added if you have longer.

How we work

Quoted to order, with the camps named

We do not publish a rate card for Namibia because the prices move by season and by availability, and a number on a page that we cannot hold is not useful to you. Send us your dates, your group and a rough budget, and we will come back with named properties, a routing and a total. For destinations outside our own operating area we work with vetted local operators, and we will tell you when that is the case.

Questions

Namibia Safaris questions

Is Namibia good for wildlife?–

+

Etosha is very good, particularly in the dry season. Elsewhere wildlife is sparser but more unusual, including desert adapted elephant and rhino.

Can I self drive?+

+

Yes, and many people do. The main routes are well maintained gravel. We arrange the vehicle, the route and the lodges.

How long do I need?+

+

Ten days covers Sossusvlei and Etosha. Fourteen lets you add Damaraland and the coast without driving all day every day.
