Morocco, a loop rather than a city break

Marrakech and Fes for the medinas, the Atlas mountains between them, and a night at a desert camp at Erg Chebbi. Ten days is comfortable.

We hold no photography of our own for this destination yet, so this page is set in type rather than dressed in pictures that are not ours. We also publish no fixed rate card here: it is quoted to order.

In short

Two cities properly, three at most, with the desert in between.

Marrakech for the Jemaa el Fna, the souks, the Bahia palace and the Majorelle garden, all inside a walkable medina. Riads inside the walls are far more interesting than hotels outside them.

Then over the Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass, through Ait Ben Haddou, and south to the dunes at Merzouga for a desert camp night. It is a long driving day and the sunrise is the reason people accept it.

North to Fes, the oldest and least altered medina in the Arab world, which needs a local guide rather than a map. Out through Chefchaouen or Casablanca, or west to Essaouira for wind and seafood.

Why go

Four reasons travellers choose Morocco

01

Marrakech

A walkable medina with the souks, the palaces and the gardens all inside it.

02

Fes

The least altered medina in the Arab world. Take a guide, not a map.

03

The Sahara

A night at Erg Chebbi, for the dunes at sunrise.

04

The Atlas

Berber villages, gorges and the road over the Tizi n’Tichka pass.

Getting there, and how we quote it

Travel and access

Casablanca and Marrakech are the main entry points, usually via Europe or the Gulf from Nairobi.

Most nationalities do not require a visa for short stays.

Distances are long, so a private vehicle with a driver is the practical way to run the loop.

How we handle this destination

We arrange Morocco as an outbound tour, quoted to order.

Desert camps range from basic to very comfortable, and we will name the camp.

Riads inside the medina walls are the better stay.

How we work

Quoted to order, with the camps named

We do not publish a rate card for Morocco because the prices move by season and by availability, and a number on a page that we cannot hold is not useful to you. Send us your dates, your group and a rough budget, and we will come back with named properties, a routing and a total. For destinations outside our own operating area we work with vetted local operators, and we will tell you when that is the case.

Questions

Morocco Tours questions

Do you have fixed Morocco packages?–

+

No published rate card. We build Morocco itineraries to order for our outbound travellers.

Is the desert night worth it?+

+

Yes, if you accept a long driving day to reach it. Erg Chebbi at sunrise is why people go.

How many cities should I include?+

+

Two properly. Marrakech and Fes is the standard pairing, with the desert between them.
