Bali, inland then coastal

Rice terraces, temples and craft villages around Ubud, then surf, beach clubs and quiet bays on the coast, with the Gili islands a boat ride away.

We hold no photography of our own for this destination yet, so this page is set in type rather than dressed in pictures that are not ours. We also publish no fixed rate card here: it is quoted to order.

In short

Four nights inland then five or six on the water. Doing it the other way round rarely works.

Ubud gives you rice terraces, waterfalls, temple complexes and a genuinely good food scene, plus the pre dawn walk up Mount Batur for sunrise above the cloud layer.

Then the coast, and which part depends on what you want: Seminyak for restaurants, Uluwatu for cliffs and surf, Sanur or Nusa Dua for calm swimming, or the Gilis for no cars and clear water.

April to October is the dry season with calmer seas. Traffic in the south is slow, so allow far more time between places than the distance suggests.

Why go

Four reasons travellers choose Bali

01

Ubud

Rice terraces, temples, craft villages and very good food.

02

Temples

Tirta Empul and Besakih inland, Tanah Lot and Uluwatu at sunset.

03

Mount Batur

A pre dawn walk up an active volcano, for sunrise above the clouds.

04

The Gili islands

No cars, clear water, turtles on the reef, and a very slow pace.

Getting there, and how we quote it

Travel and access

Connections from Nairobi run via the Gulf or Singapore to Denpasar.

Many nationalities receive a visa on arrival, extendable once.

Fast boats to the Gilis run in the morning and are weather dependent.

How we handle this destination

We arrange Bali as an outbound tour, quoted to order.

Private pool villas cost what a standard hotel room costs elsewhere, and we will always price them.

Combining Bali with Singapore makes the long flight more worthwhile.

How we work

Quoted to order, with the camps named

We do not publish a rate card for Bali because the prices move by season and by availability, and a number on a page that we cannot hold is not useful to you. Send us your dates, your group and a rough budget, and we will come back with named properties, a routing and a total. For destinations outside our own operating area we work with vetted local operators, and we will tell you when that is the case.

Questions

Bali Tours questions

Ubud or the beach?–

+

Both. Four nights inland then five on the coast is the split that works for most travellers.

Is Bali crowded?+

+

The south is, in places. Ubud, the east coast and the north are much quieter, and we route around the worst of it.

When is the best time?+

+

April to October. May, June and September are the sweet spot, before and after peak.
