Experiences

A family safari fails on logistics, not on wildlife

Long transfers, no shade, no pool and a fixed drive schedule will undo any number of lions. We build family routes around shorter days, a private vehicle you can turn around, and lodges that genuinely want children there.

In short

A private vehicle is not a luxury on a family safari. It is the entire difference between a good week and a hard one.

It means you leave when your children are ready, come back when they are tired, and stop when someone needs the toilet. Nobody else in the vehicle is waiting, and no guide is watching the clock for the next group.

Park choice matters nearly as much. Amboseli is flat, open and full of elephants, so children see something enormous within minutes. Lake Nakuru is small and enclosed, with rhino close to the road. The Mara has the density to reward a two hour drive.

And then the lodges: family rooms or adjoining tents, a pool for the middle of the day, flexible meal times, and a kitchen that will cook something plain on request.

How we plan them

Fewer parks, shorter days, and a swim at noon

Two or three parks, not five. Unpacking every night is what exhausts children, and a route with fewer moves gives you the afternoons back.

Driving days under four hours where possible, broken with stops. If the road day to the Mara is too long for your group we will quote the flight instead and hold a vehicle and guide in the reserve.

Activities beyond the game drive: the boat at Nakuru, Crescent Island at Naivasha where you can walk among zebra and giraffe, a Maasai village visit, and junior ranger programmes at the camps that run them. And guides who are actually good with children, which is a real variable and one we select for.

Practical

Things parents ask us to sort out in advance

Before you fly

Check whether your children need a Kenya eTA. In most cases they do.

Discuss malaria prophylaxis for children with your doctor early, because some options need lead time.

Neutral clothing, sun hats, high factor sunscreen and a warm layer for early mornings.

Binoculars for each child. It changes how much they engage more than anything else you can pack.

On the road

We keep drinking water and snacks in the vehicle at all times.

Toilet stops are planned into every transfer.

Charging points in the vehicle, because some transfers are long.

If a drive is not working, we come back. That is the point of a private vehicle.

Guides brief children directly on day one, which works better than parents repeating the rules.

Safety

Three rules, explained to the children rather than at them

Stay in the vehicle unless the guide says otherwise. Take the escort at camp after dark. Do not feed anything, ever. Our guides give that briefing directly to children on the first morning, in plain language, and in our experience children follow rules from a guide far more readily than from a parent repeating them.

Questions

Family safari questions

What is the minimum age?–

+

Around six is when children start getting real value from a general safari. Gorilla trekking has a hard minimum of 15, and walking safaris usually require 12.

Are game drives too long for young children?+

+

They can be, which is why we run private vehicles. A two hour drive that returns for a swim works far better than a four hour one that has to be endured.

Do lodges have family rooms?+

+

Many do, as family tents or adjoining rooms. We only propose properties that can take your group properly, and we confirm the configuration before quoting.

Is a safari safe for children?+

+

With sensible rules, yes. Stay in the vehicle, follow the guide, use the escort at night. Our guides brief children directly on day one.

Can children go up in a balloon?+

+

Most Maasai Mara operators set a minimum age of around seven, and some a minimum height. We confirm with the operator for your dates.
