Southern Africa

Botswana, and what you are actually paying for

The Okavango Delta by mokoro and light aircraft, the largest elephant population in Africa on the Chobe river, and the Kalahari salt pans. Very few other vehicles, anywhere.

We hold no photography of our own for this destination yet, so this page is set in type rather than dressed in pictures that are not ours. We also publish no fixed rate card here: it is quoted to order.

In short

Botswana caps visitor numbers through concession leases rather than gate fees. That is the whole product.

Camps are small, concessions are large, and in a private concession off road driving, night drives and walking are all permitted, which national parks do not allow. You will rarely share a sighting.

The Delta is water based and seasonal, peaking from June to September when the flood arrives from the Angolan highlands. Chobe is the elephant destination and pairs easily with Victoria Falls.

November to March is green season. The Kalahari comes alive, birding is superb, and Delta camps drop their rates substantially.

Why go

Four reasons travellers choose Botswana

01

Mokoro on the Delta

Poled through channels in a shallow canoe, at water level, with reeds either side.

02

Chobe elephants

The largest concentration in Africa, best from a boat in the late afternoon.

03

Private concessions

Off road driving, night drives and walking, none of which national parks permit.

04

Kalahari pans

Makgadikgadi and Nxai for meerkats, brown hyena and the green season zebra migration.

Getting there, and how we quote it

Travel and access

Access between camps is by light aircraft, which is included in Delta itineraries.

Baggage on light aircraft is limited, usually to soft bags of around 20 kg.

Camps are all inclusive of meals, drinks and activities.

How we handle this destination

We quote Botswana to order. Camp rates change by season and availability is tight in peak months.

Combining Chobe with Victoria Falls is the most cost effective way in.

Green season is the value window here rather than a compromise.

How we work

Quoted to order, with the camps named

We do not publish a rate card for Botswana because the prices move by season and by availability, and a number on a page that we cannot hold is not useful to you. Send us your dates, your group and a rough budget, and we will come back with named properties, a routing and a total. For destinations outside our own operating area we work with vetted local operators, and we will tell you when that is the case.

Questions

Botswana Safaris questions

Why is Botswana expensive?–

+

Because access is controlled. Concessions limit bed numbers, camps are small and supplied by air, and the price reflects exclusivity rather than luxury alone.

Do you have Botswana packages?+

+

Not published. We build Botswana itineraries to order and quote them with the inter-camp flights included.

When is the Delta at its best?+

+

June to September, when the annual flood is at its peak and the channels are navigable.
